Nature and
evolution take things down to their most elegant form, no more material than
absolutely necessary, but also build in redundancy. Calatrava’s designs are often inspired by nature, featuring a
combination of organic forms and technological innovation. A biomimetic infrastructure is what's inherent
in Calatrava's work. He has this insight that natural processes create
efficiencies. His art museum in Milwaukee has wings that open to the sky. In
the crowning element of the brise soleil, the building’s form is at once formal
(completing the composition), functional (controlling the level of light),
symbolic (opening to welcome visitors), and iconic (creating a memorable image
for the Museum and the city). Calatrava's understanding of natural engineering has allowed him to build
radically innovative structures, some of which seem to defy gravity.
